A Mercedes V-Class, properly looked after.

Always a long-wheelbase V-Class: clean, quiet, with room for all the luggage. The standard does not change from one day to the next.

Inside

Three hours pass better when the space is real

Naples to Rome takes about as long as a short-haul flight. What makes the difference is what surrounds you while it passes.

  • Light leather, not black

In summer a dark cabin turns into an oven even with the air on. The seats here are light leather and the rear windows are tinted: you can look out without being looked at, and without cooking.

  • The doors slide

They open sideways instead of swinging wide. In a tight car park or under a hotel portico you step straight out — no contortions, and no door in the side of the car next to you.

  • The climate works at the back too

Whoever sits in the back is not stuck with the driver’s choices. A small thing, until six of you travel in August.

  • A boot behind the third row

Six large cases fit without folding a seat away and without anything ending up on anyone’s lap. It is the reason to travel in a van rather than a saloon.

On board

Three hours is a lot. Spend them however you like.

Nobody expects you to make conversation. The most appreciated part of this job is a quiet journey — talk if you want to, disappear if you would rather.

  • Work

A socket at every seat and Wi-Fi on board. Two hours of motorway are two hours of work, if you need them.

  • Sleep

At four in the morning most people sleep, and rightly so. The seats recline and the blinds are there.

  • Watch it go by

The stretch between Naples and Cassino at sunset is one of the reasons not to be the one driving.

What car it is, exactly

A long-wheelbase Mercedes-Benz Classe V, 5,37 metres. Automatic gearbox, light leather with wood trim inside, sliding side doors. That is the standard the service is built on: what changes from one trip to the next is the road, not what you find on board.
